Around 1530, a game of chance called lotto was being played in Italy. Later in the 1700s, a home version called Tombola was invented in Naples, with the addition of cards, tokens, and the calling out of numbers.

The game then got popularized in various other nations like France and Germany for different reasons, until it arrived to America in the early 1920s.

There, Hugh J. Ward created and standardized the game at carnivals while also publishing a rule book about it.

Further, the game was later brought to New York by Edwin Lowe, where he named it “Beano” because of the dried beans he used as tokens.

That said, while the origin of its current name is unknown, there are claims that one of Lowe’s friends was so excited when she won that she yelled out “Bingo” instead of “Beano”.
